Sure-Fit Auto Care Center, on West Tuscarawas Street, is now celebrating its 50th year in business as a full service trim and detail shop for cars, boats and campers.
Sure-Fit Auto Care Center has come a long way since 1948, when Ray Zink went into the business of selling custom seat covers for new and used automobiles. At the time, seat covers were the second thing people bought, after buying a new car. A new car was a major purchase and a big deal. The proud owner wanted to keep the thing looking brand new and spiffy clean.
Ray's Seat Covers was a success and the beginning of a family business. In 1950, Ray's son Richard came into the business. Gary Zink, the baby brother, joined his older brother Richard and father Ray in the family business, and eventually the two brothers bought out their dad's interest in the company after their dad retired. Richard retired next and Gary bought out his brother's interest. Gary has since been joined in business by his son Greg, which makes Sure-Fit Auto Care Center a third-generation family business. As operations manager, Greg Zink is all over the map — handling sales, bookkeeping, marketing, estimating and customer service. His dad, Gary is still the full-time president and owner/operator of Sure-Fit Auto Care Center, but now he gets a bit of down time, including the occasional vacation.
Sure-Fit Auto Care Center is an example of a company that evolves with the times. As custom seat covers became less popular, Ray's Seat Covers diversified and became Sure-Fit Auto Care Center, a full service trim and detail shop that specializes in convertible tops, boat covers and tops, and leather interiors for new and used cars and trucks.
Sure-Fit Auto Care Center does work like mock tops, sunroofs, keyless entry, remote starters and alarm systems. As a full service detail shop, it handles insurance work, antique restoration, dealer warranty work, motor homes and any type of upholstery work on mobile entities. Sure-Fit Auto Care Center's most unique job was retrofitting a 1966 T-Bird convertible with a hot tub. Yes, someone in the Canton area actually has a hot tub inside a '66 T-Bird parked on the deck in his backyard.
"The business has grown steadily, year after year," Gary Zink said, "but our business philosophy has always been that if we have to make a choice, we'd rather do less and do it right."
Sure-Fit Auto Care Center is looking for qualified individuals or trainees who want to work for a good company year-round as a sewer/fabricator/designer.
Sure-Fit Auto Care Center is also offering discounts on trim work for boats and RVs that are not used during the winter. Customers may leave their boats or campers in Sure-Fit Auto Care Center's secure, fenced facilities without storage fees until the work is completed. "We're not as busy in the winter, so that's why we're offering special pricing." Zink said. "We want to keep our employees busy and offer our customers off-season rates."
